Abstract

In this thesis measurements on quench-condensed rare gas films were carried out using high frequency surface acoustic waves. A main aspect was to investigate the desorption behavior of binary rare gas mixtures, especially of the system Argon(1-c)/Neon(c). For small and very large concentrations c a behavior is found, which indicates the existence of a substitutionally disordered solid. In contrast, for concentrations 0.25<c<0.92 two discrete temperatures for neon desorption exist. This indicates that for a wide range of concentration two separate phases, one of pure neon, the other of crystallites with either AB(2) or AB(3) structure are formed. A further main focus of the experiments was the investigation of the elastic properties of noble gas films. The density and elastic constants turned out to be lower than those of corresponding bulk samples. In all films tunneling systems with a broad energy distribution were found. On annealing, structural relaxation processes induce an increase of the density and of the elastic constants. In addition, the number of tunneling states decreases and the distribution of parameters changes qualitatively.
