Abstract

In the past decades, there have been multiple theoretical and experimental studies of Radiative Double Electron Capture (RDEC), a process which is not well understood, up to now. Here, a bare ion captures two target electrons simultaneously under the emission of only one photon. This process is expected to have a much smaller cross-section than a single radiative electron capture (REC) process, which is supported by the fact that up to now only a single experimental observation of RDEC has been reported. For this reason, a dedicated experiment has been prepared and conducted at the gasjet target of the experimental storage ring at GSI. Bare chromium ions were collided on two target gases (helium and nitrogen) at an energy of 30 MeV/u. The x-rays produced in these collisions were recorded with standard semiconductor detectors and the down-charged projectiles with a multi wire proportional counter (MWPC). The measured x-ray spectra could therefore be analysed incoincidence with time and charge-state of the ions. From the carefully analysed data, no identification of the RDEC lines could be made. However, experimental upper limits were derived for both collision systems. From this study, we conclude that a more detailed theoretical description of the RDEC process is still required.
