Abstract

Speleothems from Oman have been established as reliable high-resolution climate archives for the periodicity and intensity of the Indian Ocean Monsoon. The aim of the study is to determine high-resolution Th/U-age profiles of the speleothems to date the periodicities of the d18O-time series. Methodological progress in TIMS and the high dating potential of the samples resulted in a high dating precision with a maximum of 0,5 A composite record of speleothems covering the past 350,000 years reveals five periods of increased monsoon intensity. One consequence of this intensification was a northwards shift of the monsoon system and the ITCZ. The Th/U-ages show, that the growth periods of the speleothems occurred during the maxima of the interglacials MIS 9, 7, 5 and 1. A high-resolution study covering the period from 9,600 to 6,100 years before present reveals a strong correlation between the precipitation proxy d18O and the solar proxy D14C. Spectral analysis of the two time series show common cycles with a solar origin. This is strong evidence for a solar forcing of the Indian Ocean Monsoon on short time scales. This study was thus able to make a contribution to the current debate about the climatic influence of solar variability.
