Abstract

Kurze Inhaltszusammenfassung in Englisch: The oxidation of thin iron films on MgO(001) and Si(100) and the associated change of the relaxation rate of free carriers in the film was examined with Fourier-Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy. Each iron film showed a frequency dependent increase of the transmission at normal incidence of several percent. The corresponding change of the relaxation rate caused by scattering of the free carriers on adsorbed oxygen atoms can be up to 100 during the first 10 L. Saturation was seen at an exposure of approx. 8 L and at a temperature of 117 K but could not be seen at room temperature. This behavior is in aggreement with literature data, measurements with auger electron spectroscopy and ellipsometry. These data show a temperature dependence of the behavior of the adsorption of O2 on iron surfaces. The change of the scattering rates also indicate a dependence on the morphology of the iron surface. Measurements of the relative reflectivity with p-polarized light at an angle of incidence of 78 degrees and at room temperature resulted in a frequency dependent decrease. At 2100 cm-1 and at an exposure of 235 L O2 this decrease was about 1.25 LEED recordings of adsorbed oxygen on an iron surface (40 L O2, room temperature) and of iron oxide 20 L O2, annealing at 896 K) were made. In both cases sharp 1x1 structures were found which suggest ordered surfaces.
