Abstract

The low temperature thermal properties of BaO-Al2O3-SiO2, BK7 and Duran in magnetic fields were studied, motivated by the recently reported magnetic field dependence of the dielectric response of multicomponent glasses. In order to examine the influence of magnetic impurities and nuclear spins, measurements of the specific heat and thermal conductivity were carried out. A commercial relaxation calorimeter was used to measure the specific heat between 0,4K and 1,5K and magnetic fields up to 9T. Considering relaxation times of the glass-subsystems (phonons, two-level-systems, electronic and nuclear magnetic systems) the automatically recorded temperature-time-profiles could be described by means of thermodynamically field equations. In all magnetic fields the iron impurities showed paramagnetic behavior. Measurements of the thermal conductivity of Duran glass (containing 126ppm Fe3+ between 32mK and 130mK were found comparable to almost iron-free BK7 glass. This result shows that the thermal conductivity is independent from iron impurities in this range. Additionally, the dielectric response of Duran glass to weak magnetic fields was investigated. The results were again comparable to BK7 glass. The magnetic field dependence was not enhanced by paramagnetic impurities.
