Abstract

We investigate the chiral phase transition in the linear sigma-model with quarks and mesons. This is done with the method of heat-kernel RG-flow equations. The RG scale is introduced via the heat-kernel-cutoff which regularizes the effective action in the Schwinger propertime representation. As an advantage of this method the heat kernel cutoff preserves all symmetries of the theory. First the Method is applied to the quark-meson-model in vacuum: a derivative expansion yields the flow equations for the effective potential, Yukawa-coupling and the wavefunction renormalization constants. This system of coupled flow equations is solved numerically. Further on, the splitting of Z-factors an Yukawa-coupling in higher order derivative expansion is calculated. For the investigation of the chiral phase transition at finite density, the flow equation for the effective potential with chemical potential is derived. It is transformed into an equation with running chemical potential. The numerical solution yields a first order phase transition at a density of 0.56 times normal nuclear matter density. The constituent quark phase at low densities is unstable, i.e. droplets of chiral symmetric matter surrounded by a nontrivial vacuum are formed. For comparison the quark meson model at finite density is solved in a mean field calculation.
