Abstract

In this thesis the geochemical behaviour of uranium in an eutrophic and seasonally stratified lake is investigated. U is a redox-sensitive trace element with an opposite behaviour to Fe and Mn: in anoxic conditions it is immobile, whereas reduced Mn and Fe can be dissolved in pore water of sediments. Lake Willersinnweiher is a strong eutrophic quarry pond with high bioproductivity and organic rich sediments (up to 7 TOC). Sedimentation rates are about 1.5 cm/y. It has a seasonal sulfidic hypolimnion in summer, in which strong precipitation and accumulation of Fe-sulfides occurs. Total and dissolved U and Fe concentrations of lake water show, that despite the SO42- reducing conditions and the occurrence of about 50 of the Fe in particulate form (as FeS) no significant amount of particulate U could be found. Nevertheless, a permanent small flux of particulate U to the top of the sediment is assumed to explain the observed enrichment in the deeper parts (10 cm depth) of the sediment column. In summer pore water data show a diffusive flux of U into the upper 4-5 cm of the sediment and precipitation. However, this diffusive flux is quite smaller than required for the observed U enrichment. In periods of ventilated bottom water (fall, winter, spring) O2 diffuses in the upper parts of the sediments, causes burn down of organic matter and diagenesis of Fe- and Mn- minerals. The recently deposited U (complex bound at mineral surfaces) is released to pore water where it reaches concentrations about 7 times higher than in lake water (calc. U lifetime considering oxidative resolution: 4 d). U diffuses along concentration gradients in two directions: into bottom water and into deeper parts of the sediment. Under sulfate reducing conditions at a depth of 8 - 10 cm U is precipitated (calc. U lifetime considering reductive precipitation: 10 h). Altogether the net U balance of the sediment is positive and so the organic rich sediments represent an important sink for U in lakes.
