Abstract

This work presents a new approach for the reconstruction of the Earth's magnetic field intensity during the last 200,000 years based on Beryllium-10 records derived from deep sea sediments. Simple box models are shown to be able to describe the distribution of the depositional flux of Be-10 in the ocean. The model results are used to quantify the transport of Be-10 and they allow to separate the Be-10-production from transport signals. The transport-corrected records are used to calculate the relative variation of the Earth's magnetic field during the last 200,000 years. A comparison of calculated Be-10-production changes with the model-corrected records -by using an inverse approach- shows evidence that the glacial South Atlantic Ocean probably was less ventilated, that there was more bio-productivity in recent high productivity areas, and that the South Atlantic deep waters were influenced by northward owing pacific deep waters. Because of the ongoing discussion about a solar-magnetic influence on climate, some possible mechanisms are summarized and discussed. The galactic cosmic ray hypothesis, which links the flux of cosmic rays to Earth's climate, is tested by comparing the reconstruction of the Earth's magnetic field to mid- and low-latitude climate-records from stalagmites. The cosmic ray hypothesis can not be confirmed unambiguously by the results of this work (because of incorrect age models, analytical errors, and the absence of a physical mechanism that describes the assumed link between cosmic rays and climate). However, a correlation between the flux of galactic cosmic rays and Earth's climate can not be excluded.
