Abstract

Oxide compounds of the platinum metal rhodium are all synthetic and have, apart from their catalytic applications, interesting electrical properties. In these compounds rhodium mostly has oxidation state +III, +IV, very rarely +V and is - independent from its oxidation state - almost without exception octahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms. There is the possibility of Rh(III) and Rh(IV) coexisting in one compound with the same octahedral coordination, resulting in an unusual "mixed" oxidation state. This thesis intends to contribute to the knowlegde of the crystal chemistry of oxidic rhodium compounds. Numerous synthesizing experiments were done by solid state reaction in open crucibles in air at temperatures between 700°C and 1200°C. New compounds obtained were examined for their crystal structure using structure refinement by the Rietveld method on X-ray powder diffraction data and evaluated for cation distribution, geometry of coordination polyhedra, occurrence of solid solutions, etc.. Synthesizing experiments by substitution of other metal cations by rhodium in well known structure types that appeared suitable, especially taking account of oxide compounds of Cr3+, whose crystal chemistry is in some aspects similar to Rh3+, as a model, resulted in the first rhodium compounds of langasite structure: Sr3RhAlGe4O14, Sr3RhGaGe4O14, Sr3RhFeGe4O14, Ba3RhGaGe4O14 as well as Pr1,4Sr1,6(Rh0,65Al0,45)Al1,8Ge3,2O14 and Pr0,9Sr2,1(Rh0,43Ga0,57)Ga2Ge3O14 with only partial substitution by rhodium. Furthermore the K4CdCl6-type compounds Sr3TmRhO6, Sr3LuRhO6 and Sr3(Nd0,707Sr0,293)RhO6 were synthesized and structurally described for the first time. For Ba(Rh0,275Ti0,725)O3, for which contradictory data existed in literature, the extent of Rh substitution was determined and, as for the already known garnet Cd3Rh2Ge3O12, the crystal structure was also refined for the first time. The search for new oxidic rhodium compounds in isothermal profiles of binary and ternary phase systems with Rh2O3 as one component did neither result in new phases for the systems CdO - Rh2O3 - SiO2/GeO2/TiO2 nor for ZnO - Rh2O3 - SiO2 (temperature of synthesis 860°C and 1000°C, resp.). In the system ZnO - Rh2O3 - GeO2 a partial solid solution series between ZnRh2O4 (spinel structure) and Zn2GeO4 with willemite structure, which contains up to 60 mol% Zn2GeO4, was found at atmospheric pressure and 1000°C. In the system ZnO - Rh2O3 - TiO2 (1000°C) complete solid solution between ZnRh2O4 with normal spinel structure and the inverse spinel Zn2TiO4 was found. The "quasi-ternary" system ZnRh2O4 - Zn2TiO4 - ZnCr2O4 also showed complete solid solution between all three end-members. Using structure refinements on solid solutions of the enclosing binary systems ZnRh2O4 - Zn2TiO4, ZnRh2O4 - ZnCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 - Zn2TiO4 it could be demonstrated that the influence of both coordination polyhedra within the spinel structure on the dimension of the unit cell, and its only cell parameter, resp., are different for all three enclosing binary systems and not restricted to the occupation pattern of the octahedral position and the size of its coordination polyhedron. In the system Rh2O3 - copper oxide - Bi2O3 (750°C), where Cu appears in two oxidation states, two new compounds were found. The composition of one could be determined as Cu0,96Bi0,016Rh2O4, and its structure could be solved. In spite of its very similar chemical composition, nearly identical cell volume as well as the same number of formula units within the unit cell, Cu0,96Bi0,016Rh2O4 has a completely different structure from CuRh2O4 (tetragonal deformed spinel), which is stabilized by a small amount of Bi. In the System Rh2O3 - Bi2O3, absolutely contrary to the literature, two new unkown compounds surprisingly appeared at a temperature of 1000°C, whereof one, Bi6Rh12O29, could be structurally characterized. Because of stoichiometric reasons rhodium must have a formal oxidation state of +3,33 in Bi6Rh12O29. The crystal structures of both, Cu0,96Bi0,016Rh2O4 and Bi6Rh12O29 had not been known before. Comparing the extent of deformation of the Rh-O-octahedra in all investigated compounds and in selected examples from the literature shows a general trend: increasing deformation of octahedra goes parallel with decreasing structural symmetry (a few exceptions were also found).
