Abstract

Plasticity in the adult brain is currently a frequently discussed Phenomenon in neuroscience. New imaging techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have the capability to show cortical plasticity when visual-like patterns are provided by a tactile input. The main advantage of the fMRI technique is the non invasive and in vivo operation. This thesis presents the description of devices which transform visual information to tactile stimuli. Bach-y-Rita named this type of devices a tactile vision substitution system (TVSS). To present visual-tactile paradigms during fMRI experiments, a pneumatically-driven tactile device (PTD) has been built capable of generating tactile stimuli on a 2-dimensional matrix with 64 tactile elements (taxel). The tactile stimuli can be complex spatial and temporal patterns. This thesis includes a detailed description of the design and activation of the PTD, a characterization of the tactile stimulus and its artefact free operation. The cortical activation evoked by tactile stimulation with the PTD is presented for three studies. In two studies the paradigm is such that the activation is expected to be in the primary somatosensory cortex. In the third study, complex patterns with a temporal component, to be interpreted as a movement, were presented. The observed changes in cortical activation dependes on the presented patterns and are extensively discussed. The Observations suggest a movement to the brodmann area 19 with increasing pattern complexity.
