Abstract

This work presents the development of a Reynolds-Stress-Model (RSM) to describe turbulent spray flames. Based on a RSM for gas phases enhanced equations have been developed considering additional source terms for the liquid phase. Using an Eulerian formalism differential equations of the Favre-averaged physical quantities for the gas phase are solved numerically. On the assumption of thin spray, the liquid phase can be described by a number of droplet packages, evaporating in the turbulent gas. Their trajectories can be described by a Lagrangian formalism. Their interaction with the gas phase is modelled by statistical methods. Herefore new ways of modelling the terms of interaction have been invented. The chemical reactions are considered using the flamelet-model for laminar diffusion flames. With the help of statistical probability distribution functions of the mixture fraction and the scalar dissipation rate, the gas temperature and the species mass fractions of the turbulent gas phase can be received out of the laminar spray flame libraries. The effect of the dependance of the spray flame libraries from the droplet size to the turbulent spray flames has been investigated. The new RSM has been verified by comparison to numerical simulations based on the k-epsilon-model, as well as to experiments of a reacting and a non-reacting methanol spray. Numerical simulations using the new RSM for turbulent spray flames instead of the k-epsilon-model deliver additional information about the variances and correlations of the gas velocity and improve the quality of the results.
