Abstract

Three-jet events in deep-inelastic positron-proton collisions have been investigated in the region of low values of the Bjørken scaling variable x (10^(-4)<x<10^(-2)) and low photon virtualities Q^2 (5 GeV^2<Q^2<80 GeV^2).The total luminosity of the data used in this analysis and collected by H1 in 1999 and 2000 is 44.2 pb^(-1). One goal was to investigate whether gluon radiation unordered in kt exists in QCD parton cascades. Such radiation is associated with terms proportional to $\log1/x$ in the QCD evolution which are mostly neglected by the DGLAP approximation. Differential three-jet cross sections are compared to QCD predictions of second and third order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s and to the predictions of leading order alpha_s Monte Carlo generators. While the alpha_s^3 prediction significantly improves the description of the data with respect to the alpha_s^2 calculation, it underestimates the data especially at low x and the number of events with more than one jet in the forward direction. Attempts to directly investigate the ordering of the radiated gluons with respect to transverse momentum and to pseudorapidity were not successful.
