Abstract

Quench-condensed rare gas films represent a simple model system to study tunneling states in amorphous and polycrystalline solids. Within this thesis an apparatus was set up to measure the elastic properties of thin films and first measurements on argon, neon, and mixtures of argon and neon were carried out. On annealing above the condensation temperature strong changes of the sound velocity occur indicating a drastic increase of the elastic constants which arise from a structural rearrangement of the film. The annealing procedure has also significant influence on the temperature dependence of the sound velocity and attenuation which is governed by interaction between the ultrasonic wave and tunneling states. Furthermore, methods are proposed to determine the density and the elastic constants of quench-condensed films and to scale the raw data appropriately to bulk values of the adsorbates. The density and the elastic constants are found to be considerably smaller than corresponding bulk values.
