Abstract

This thesis presents the latest measurement of the electron asymmetry A, correlation electron momentum wirh neutron spin, in the decay of free polarized neutrons with the spectrometer PERKEO II. In former measurements with PERKEO II, the main sources of uncertainity were neutron polarization and unrecognized background. Neutron polarization was enhanced to 99.7(1) %. In the fitting region the beam-dependent signal-to-noise-ratio was 1700:1, the correction due to unrecognized background subsided from 0.5(25) % to 0.1(1) %. Altogether the corrections were reduced from 1.6 % to 0.4 %, whereas other groups measuring the same parameter claim a correction of 15 to 30 %. Statistic and systematic uncertainty were halfed, so we yield with A=-0.11948(40) the most precise A value at this time. With this value of A one can determine lambda=-1.2754(11), the ratio between axial and vector couplings in weak interaction. lambda is one of the most important constants in astrophysics and cosmology. Especially one can use $\lamb da$ and the neutron lifetime tau to calculate V_ud, the first element of quark mixing CKM-matrix. Knowing V_ud and V_us, CKM-matrix can be checked to be unitary.
