Abstract

Translation of abstract (English)

The first part of this work presents a multi tracer study to investigate the groundwater of the Odenwald region using stable and radioactive isotopes (2H, 18O, 3H) as well as different dating methods (SF6, 3H-3He) and noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe). In particular questions concerning groundwater recharge areas, recharge rates, groundwater mixing and residence times of the groundwater were examined. The isotopic signature of stable isotopes 2H and 18O indicates that groundwater formation takes place evenly distributed over the year, slightly enhanced in cold seasons. Furthermore, stable isotopes are able to distinguish groundwater of different regions, thus groundwater of the Hessian Reed is partly (0-100%) formed in the crystalline Odenwald. Groundwater dating shows robust 3H-3He ages of few years in areas of potential groundwater recharge up to no longer datable groundwater (>45 years) of the Hessian Reed. High mixing ratios of old (tritium free) and young (tritium bearing) water is detectable. Groundwater dating by SF6 is not possible due to a terrigenic (natural) SF6-source in regions of crystalline lithology. High SF6 concentrations correlate with high radon and radiogenic helium concentrations and support the idea that the production of SF6 is favoured by the decay of radioactive elements in the soil. Results of stable isotopes and age distribution allow to estimate an upper limit of the mean recharge rate of groundwater from the crystalline Odenwald to the Hessian Reed of <(90+-23)l/(skm2). In the second part of this work a new analytical system for noble gas measurements of the Institute of Environmental Physics of Heidelberg is described in detail. The system permits precise analysis of noble gases as well as their isotope ratios from water and gas samples. Typical precisions of the measurements of 3He, 4He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe concentrations are +-2,4%, +-0,38%, +-0,41%, +-0,43%, +-1,02% und +-1,01%, respectively.
