Abstract

Due to the distribution of heat, moisture and carbon ocean circulation plays a key role in the climate system. Cold-Events of the climatic past e.g. during the transition of the last Glacial to the present Holocene are believed to be caused by variations of the thermohaline circulation. This study adresses the reconstruction of the Atlantic overturning circulation applying the 231Pa/230Th ratio from deep sea sediments. To constrain the trigger of these cold-events the variability of oceanic overturning is examined based on 231Pa/230Th-proles from ve sediment cores from the Atlantic Ocean back to 30,000 years. Besides the measurement of 231Pa/230Th using ICP-MS and AMS, investigations of particle composition in the sediment samples were performed to determine the content of biogenic opal, since opal crucially controls the 231Pa/230Th fractionation. These bindings indicate a strong influence of particle flux and particle composition on the 231Pa/230Th. Therefore, it is premature to conclude that coinciding 231Pa/230Th peaks and cold events point to a weakening of Atlantic circulation as suggested by former studies. Since changes in sedimentary 231Pa/230Th additionally display the prevailing water mass, the 231Pa/230Th from a single core can not be considered as a kinematic proxy of circulation strength only. However, from their impact on sedimentary 231Pa/230Th water mass distributions during the last Glacial and the Termination can be constrained.
