Abstract

Thin chromium and aluminum films with thicknesses in the range of a few nanometers were prepared in ultra high vacuum. During film growth their dynamic conductivity was measured in-situ in the infrared regime. For an understanding of the processes determining the conductivity, the measured spectra were interpreted with the Drude and the Drude-Smith model. By this means it is possible to distinguish between different phases in the film growth. For aluminum a Vollmer-Weber-growth was found. As expected, the film thickness at the percolation transition shows a strong temperature dependence. The behaviour of chromium must be characterised as peculiar: Below a critical thickness of 2.5nm the IR-spectra cannot be described by the Drude-model. From the measurements at different substrate temperatures, an amorphous and an island-like growth can be excluded. The presented explanation is based on a known transition from fcc clusters to the bulk bcc phase of chromium. The spectra of the nanocrystalline fcc phase can be described by a Drude-Smith type dielectric function, and the obtained parameters further back the proposed interpretation.
