Abstract

The W pair production cross section in e+e- reactions at center-of-mass energies of 189 GeV to 202 GeV has been determined using the data of the OPAL detector. For this purpose the hadronic W pairs were used, which provide, with around 46, the largest contribution to the total cross section. This channel has, however, a large background, mainly from Z/gamma -> qq. For this reason a neural network has been trained and studied to select signal events with large efficiency and purity. A fit has been made to the shape of the network output whose free parameter is the hadronic part of the cross section. From this the cross section can be calculated by using the branching fraction Br(W -> qq). The results for the various energies are: sigma_WW(189GeV)=(16.71 +/- 0.52 +/- 0.58)pb sigma_WW(192GeV)=(16.95 +/- 1.33 +/- 0.63)pb sigma_WW(196GeV)=(18.32 +/- 0.85 +/- 0.65)pb sigma_WW(200GeV)=(16.27 +/- 0.80 +/- 0.68)pb sigma_WW(202GeV)=(18.08 +/- 1.22 +/- 0.66)pb These results are, within their errors, consistent with the Standard Model expectations.
