Abstract

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) has crucial influence on the global climate due to the transport of heat and the redistribution of carbon in the atmosphere and deep sea. A major task of paleoceanography therefore is the reconstruction of past AMOC conditions to derive possible scenarios of future climate changes. Special interest focusses on the question of a disturbence of the AMOC due to freshwater input because of melting icebergs. The so-called Heinrich-Events, embossed by inputs of large amounts of freshwater into the North-Atlantic from melting icebergs, allow investigations of the AMOC behaviour on such terms. A collapse of northern deep water formation is expected because of melting icebergs with large-scale consequences for the atlantic circulation. For reconstructing the atlantic circulation analysis of the ratio protactinium-231 to thorium-230 (231Pa/230Th) in marine sediments has established. In this thesis a dataset of published 231Pa/230Th from marine sediments has been generated and extended with new measurements on sediment-cores from the atlantic ocean. Strength and geometry of the AMOC during Heinrich-Stadials 1 and 2 is derived from the new database. In the context of melting ice-sheets in greenland and increasing precipitation in the North-Atlantic, Heinrich-Events could be condsidered as model scenarios to improve our understanding of an upcoming reaction of the AMOC to climate change.
