Abstract

Topic of this thesis are heavy ion induced modifications on the surface of ionic crystals. Single-crystals of LiF and CaF2 as model systems have been studied with scanning force microscopy (SFM). On both materials, tiny little hillocks are found after irradiation (height few nm, radii ca. 10 nm). The accuracy of SFM is limited by the finite curvature radius of the sensor tip. Therefore, this error source is first analyzed quantitatively, and subsequently a way for correction is presented. The corrected data reveals that above a certain energy loss threshold the heights of the hillocks increase linearly and the radii follow a power law as a function of energy loss at the surface. Addititional annealing experiments suggest that the hillocks may consist of metallic colloids. This assumption allows a simple theoretical modellization of the size of the tracks.
