Abstract

Bromoxide is a radical which makes a major contribution to the catalytic destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer protecting from harmfull ultraviolett radiation. The method of differential optical absorption spectroscopy allows for the sensitive detection of this trace gas. To measure the vertical concentration of bromoxide an uv-/visible spectrograph was developed especially for the use on stratospheric balloons. This work describes the instrument, the bromoxide evaluation of the spectra, a method to interpret residuals being used at first for DOAS evaluation and gives the vertical concentration of bromoxide during three balloon flights.
