Abstract

Within this thesis measurements on quench-condensed noble gas films were carried out by means of high frequency surface acoustic waves. The main aspect was to investigate the desorption behaviour of binary mixtures of neon, argon, krypton and xenon. For this purpose an efficient helium evaporation cryostat was designed which can be inserted into common helium storage vessels. The setup provides for a good control of the preparation and desorption conditions in the temperature range between 1K and 60 K. By systematically varying the preparation conditions (condensation and gas temperature as well as composition of the mixture) one can draw conclusions from the desorption behaviour continuous or steplike behaviour at discrete desorption temperatures on the configuration in the solid state. For similar sizes in the atomic diameter (e.g. argon/krypton mixture) a substitutionally disordered solid is formed whereas for increasing differences in sizes mixed phases with fixed stoichiometry exist. This gives strong evidence for the existence of AB2- and A2B-structures in neon/argon and neon/krypton mixtures.
