Abstract

Hundert Jahre nach Aby Warburgs berühmter Interpretation zum Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara ist die Sala dei Mesi nach wie vor irritierend und viel diskutiert. Neben dem bedauerlichen Zustand des astrologischen Freskenprogramms wirken viele Bildfelder asymmetrisch und aus der Ordnung. Im Aufsatz wird diese sonderbare Situation analysiert und das astrologische System der Fresken sowie dessen prognostische Funktion in Bezug auf den Jahreszyklus rekonstruiert. Die Symmetrie der Jahreszeiten und der astronomischen Konjunktionen hätten in der Sala dei Mesi mit leicht verändertem Grundriss abgebildet werden können. In dem Moment, wo sich Borso d'Este, Herzog von Ferrara, entschieden hatte, den Palazzo zu seiner Hauptresidenz zu machen, scheint der Umbau des Gebäudes grundlegend neu geplant worden zu sein.

Translation of abstract (English)

A hundred years after Aby Warburg's splendid interpretation of Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara, the Sala dei Mesi remains confusing and widely discussed. Apart from the deplorable condition of the astrological frescoes, a lot of its sections appear asymmetric and disordered. The aim of this article is to analyse these oddities and reconstruct the astrological system of the frescoes as well as their function as an annual prognosis. The symmetry of seasons and astronomic conjunctions could have been visualized at the Sala dei Mesi with a slightly different floor plan. In the moment when Borso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, decided to use the palace as his main residence, the whole modification of the building seems to underwent significant changes.
