Abstract
In this article I argue that a small antique marble group of the "Three Satyrs" from the collection of Lorenzo de' Medici is our most important point of reference for Michelangelo's understanding and use of antique art and that even his idea of the "non finito" stems from this little piece of antique sculpture which was re-discovered only recently.
