Abstract
This article outlines the history of the Institute of Art History at Leipzig University, which was founded in 1873, making it one of the oldest institutes of its kind in the world (only the institute in Bonn, founded in 1872, is older). The professors who worked at the Leipzig Institute included Anton Springer, Hubert Janitschek, August Schmarsow, Wilhelm Pinder, Leopold Bruhns, Theodor Hetzer and Johannes Jahn.
