Abstract
Max Beckmann schildert auf diesem Gemälde den Traum von Macht und Reichtum in einem Spielcasino, das geplündert wird. Raffgierige Croupiers werden von bewaffneten Kapuzenräubern auf frischer Tat ertappt während unter den verängstigten Verlierern eine verwegene frivole Dame auf die Karte mit dem kalten schwarzen Herzen verweist, das nun blutet. Es geht nicht nur um Gewinn oder Verlust, sondern um Leben und Tod und der Maler befand sich mitten im zweiten Weltkrieg in Amsterdam während der Deutschen Besatzung. Was hat er erlebt? Was verbirgt sich hinter diesen Gestalten?
Translation of abstract (English)
In this painting, Max Beckmann depicts the dream of power and wealth in a casino that is being looted. Greedy croupiers are caught in the act by armed hooded robbers and the players in the roles of frightened losers and a daring frivolous lady point to the card with the cold black heart that is now bleeding. It is not just a matter of winning or losing, but of life and death. The painter was in the middle of the Second World War in Amsterdam during the German occupation when he painted it. What did he experience? What is hiding behind these figures?
