Abstract
Translation of abstract (English)
The British artist Vanessa Bell (1879–1961), together with her sister, the writer Virginia Woolf, formed the core of the London Bloomsbury Group, which defined modernism in England at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1913, Bell founded an experimental design workshop, the so-called Omega Workshops, together with the painter Duncan Grant and the art critic Roger Fry. During this period – between 1913 and 1915 – Grant produced a series of abstract paintings whose innovative character is examined in this research paper and re-located within the development of artistic abstraction: On the one hand, abstraction within the oeuvre of Bell is the result of an intensive engagement with the European avant-gardes of the time and, on the other, an expression of the search for a modernism in art and design.
