Abstract
Mit der Veröffentlichung der 95 Thesen und weiterer kritischer Schriften durch Martin Luther begann vor 500 Jahren die Reformation. Aber nicht nur Texte waren für deren raschen Erfolg von hoher Bedeutung, auch die Macht der Bilder erfuhr in diesem ideologischen wie konfessionellen Kampf eine bis dahin kaum gekannte Relevanz. Kern der neuen lutherischen Theologie war die Lehre von der Rechtfertigung des Menschen. In dieser entwickelte der Reformator auf Basis des biblischen Römerbriefes das Konzept, dass der Mensch allein durch den Glauben an Christus errettet werde. Es war Lucas Cranach der Ältere, der diese reformatorische Erkenntnis vom Text in das Medium des Bildes überführte. Das Thema „Gesetz und Gnade“ stellt die Erlösung des Menschen als allegorisches Lehrbild dar und zählt zu den erfolgreichsten Bilderfindungen des 16. Jahrhunderts. Die wenigen erhaltenen Fassungen Cranachs befinden sich heute in namhaften Museen. Es spricht für die überregional bedeutende Qualität der Kamenzer Kunstschätze in Sachsen, dass auch das dortige Sakralmuseum St. Annen eine besonders kostbare Version dieses Themas bewahrt. Gemalt wurde das Bildpaar „Gesetz und Gnade“ vom Schneeberger Maler und Cranach-Schüler Wolfgang Krodel dem Älteren im Jahr 1542. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt dieses Bildpaar nun erstmals ausführlich vor und beschreibt anhand von vielen Quellentexten und Vergleichsabbildung das Bildthema „Gesetz und Gnade“. Damit liefert der Aufsatz einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Bildgeschichte der Reformation sowie zum spannungsreichen Wechselspiel zwischen (Bibel-)Text und dem Bild als darstellendes Medium im 16. Jahrhundert.
Translation of abstract (English)
The Reformation began 500 years ago with the publication of the 95 Theses and other critical writings by Martin Luther. However, it was not only texts that were of great importance for its rapid success; the power of images also gained an unprecedented relevance in this ideological and confessional struggle. The core of the new Lutheran theology was the concept of the justification of man. Based on the biblical letter to the Romans, the reformer developed the concept that man is saved through faith in Christ alone. It was Lucas Cranach the Elder who transferred this reformatory understanding from the text into the medium of the picture. The theme of "Law and Grace" depicts the redemption of man as an allegorical doctrinal image and is one of the most successful pictorial inventions of the 16th century. The few surviving versions of Cranach's work can be found in renowned museums today. The fact that the St Annen Sacred Art Museum in Kamenz also preserves a particularly valuable version of this theme is testament to the supra-regional quality of its art collection. The painting "Law and Grace" was painted by the Schneeberg painter and Cranach pupil Wolfgang Krodel the Elder in 1542. This article presents this pair of paintings in detail for the first time and describes the subject of the painting "Law and Grace" using numerous historical sources and comparative illustrations. The essay thus makes an important contribution to the pictorial history of the Reformation as well as to the tense interplay between (biblical) text and the image as a representational medium.
