Abstract

Werner Haftmann (1912-1999) begann seine Ausbildung und Karriere im Bereich der Kunstgeschichte der Renaissance während des Nazi-Regimes. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde er zu einem der einflussreichsten Kunsthistoriker in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Haftmanns Biographie und sein Wirken als Direktor der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin kritisch zu betrachten, um die nach dem Krieg entstandenen Mythen über seinen persönlichen und beruflichen Werdegang zu widerlegen. Die Studie zeigt, dass die Analyse der Entwicklung der Sammlungen und des Ausstellungsprogramms der Neuen Nationalgalerie untrennbar mit der Kenntnis von Haftmanns Biographie und Karriere verbunden ist.

Translation of abstract (English)

Werner Haftmann (1912-1999) began his studies and career in the field of Renaissance art history during the Nazi regime. After the Second World War, he became one of the most influential art historians in the Federal Republic of Germany. The aim of this work is to take a critical look at Haftmann's biography and his work as the director of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin in order to dispel the myths about his life and professional career that emerged after the war. The study shows that the analysis of the development of the collections and the exhibition programme of the Neue Nationalgalerie is inextricably linked to the knowledge of Haftmann's biography and career.
