Abstract

FONTES 47 publishes two sixteenth-century iconographical texts for Giorgio Vasari’s cycle of paintings in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence: (1) Cosimo Bartoli’s "invenzione" for the Castration of Caelus, and (2) Giorgio Vasari’s description of his painting based on this invention. Vasari’s "Castration of Caelus" constitutes the central work of the upper level of Vasari’s decoration in the Palazzo Vecchio, the Quartiere degli Elementi. An essay examines the consequences of the iconographical invention for the visual appearance of the painting.

In FONTES 47 werden zwei ikonographische Texte zum Bildzyklus von Giorgio Vasari im Palazzo Vecchio in Florenz veröffentlicht: (1) die "invenzione" Cosimo Bartolis für die "Kastration des Caelus (oder Uranus)" und (2) die Bildbeschreibung Vasaris seines Deckenbildes des selben Sujets, welches auf der Bilderfindung Bartolis basiert. Die "Kastration des Caelus (oder Uranus)" Vasaris bildet das zentrale Bild der vasarianischen Ausstattung der oberen Etage im Palazzo Vecchio, des Quartiere degli Elementi. Ein den Quellentexten vorangesteller Essay versucht, die Konsquenzen der ikonographischen Erfindung für das Erscheinungsbild des Gemäldes zu analysieren.
