Abstract

This article explores the motive of palm reading and the representation of "gypsies" in late medieval and early modern art by reference to exemplary works. Obviously, artists, commissioners and audience were fascinated by the ambivalence of the act of palm reading inherent in the interaction itself: The fact that a substantially marginalized and excluded group of strangers is given credit for and is charged with the prediction of one’s proper future and "fate". The images in this way enact a specific moment of social distance and spatial closeness. Often, even all further elements of the depiction associated with "gypsies" are embraced by the motive of palm reading, especially thievery. The set of distinctive features pertinent to the identification of scenes only slightly varies in terms of region and epoch. Whilst "gypsies" can function as objects of inclusion in pictorial representations, the motive of palm reading gradually signifies exclusion.
