Abstract

Jahrhunderts.

Translation of abstract (English)

The silent reading, which ranges from the unconscious recording of "communication notes" in everyday life to the consciously retreat into silence, seems to us today much more common than loud reading, and has its very own history of development. It tended to be the refuge of women being an inner experience and freedom far from the social norms. In the history of art, the portrayal of readers who devote themselves intensively to reading is an expression of an essentially cultural phenomenon. The article sheds light on the presentation of silent readers, as well as reading practices and reading experiences in 17th-19th century painting.
