Abstract
In Mecklenburg haben sich viele bis heute häufig unbeachtet gebliebene Flügelretabel erhalten, die in den Jahrzehnten bis zur Einführung der Reformation in hoher Anzahl gestiftet wurden. Dieser unzureichend erschlossene Denkmälerbestand wird erstmals grundlegend flächendeckend und umfassend untersucht, wobei der Fokus nicht nur auf den großen Hansestädten Wismar und Rostock liegt, sondern auch kleinere Städte im Binnenland wie Parchim, Güstrow, Neubrandenburg, Friedland und Dargun sowie das Hinterland erfasst. Grundlage der künstlerischen Vielfalt der erhaltenen Werke, zu denen Holzskulptur, Tafelmalerei und die Schreinkonstruktionen gehören, ist ihr historischer Kontext, der neben Fragen der Provenienz und Denkmalpflege auch die Entstehungsbedingungen hinsichtlich Werkstattorganisation, Auftragsvergabe und Arbeitsteilung thematisiert. Durch die Ausstrahlung der größeren und kleineren Zentren, in denen diverse Werkstätten ansässig waren, werden Verbreitungswege von Kunsttransfer nachvollziehbar, die nicht zuletzt auf die räumliche Mobilität der beteiligten Spezialhandwerker und deren Innovationsfähigkeit zurückgehen.
Translation of abstract (English)
In Mecklenburg, many winged altarpieces have been preserved that have often gone unnoticed until today and were donated in large numbers in the decades leading up to the introduction of the Reformation. For the first time, this insufficiently explored stock of monuments is being fundamentally and comprehensively investigated, focusing not only on the large Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Rostock, but also covering smaller inland towns such as Parchim, Güstrow, Neubrandenburg, Friedland and Dargun as well as the hinterland. The basis of the artistic diversity of the surviving works, which include wooden sculpture, panel painting and the shrine constructions, is their historical context, which, in addition to questions of provenance and monument preservation, also addresses the conditions under which they were created in terms of workshop organisation, commissioning and division of labour. Through the charisma of the larger and smaller centres in which various workshops were located, it is possible to understand how art was transferred, which was due not least to the spatial mobility of the specialist craftsmen involved and their capacity for innovation.
