Abstract

This is a detailed chronological study of Leonardo's drawings of human proportion and movement and identifies three types/ periods: anthropometric studies (1489-1493), geometric studies (1493-1498), and studies of movement unconstrained by measurement systems (after 1500). I also argue that a substantial part of the drawings in the Codex Huygens (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library) belong to the second type/period, while those in the Codex Urbinas (Rome, Vatican library) belong to the third.
