Abstract
Following a discussion of the most recent studies on the Mona Lisa, this article argues, on the basis of a new interpretation of known and un-known sources and documents, that this portrait is indeed that of Lisa del Giocondo, and that it was commissioned from Leonardo between 1503 and 1506 by Francesco del Giocondo. The article places the work in the context of the portraits of female beauty and virtue painted in Florence in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
