Abstract
The author reviews Leonardo da Vinci's career as a painter and attempts to find the respective patrons for each of his works. The article ("Career Patterns", similar to Michael Baxandall’s “Patterns of Intention”) thus represents a critical attempt to reconstruct the individual economic and sociological conditions under which Leonardo created his works and advanced his career. In contrast to the prevailing paradigms of Leonardo research, the aim here is to make a contribution to the social history of art.
