Abstract
This article deals with the question of whether Leonardo's scientific practices preceded his art or vice versa. I argue that Leonardo's art generally came first and that he only arrived at his scientific ideas on the basis of his own experience with his own artistic practice. A good example is anatomy: his anatomical knowledge and insights are already evident in his painting of Jerome. However, his anatomical studies only followed later.
