Abstract
This article examines the roots of Paul Klee's ‘sexual economy’. Following his ‘education sentimentale’, the artist finds inspiration for artistic improvement through asceticism and the sublimation of instincts as described in the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, Arthur Schopenhauer and Otto Weininger, among others. Nevertheless, it is argued, Klee's asceticism is part of a mise en scène, partly hiding the sexual truth behind a fictitious image.
