Abstract

‘Motions of the Mind’ is a frequently discussed topic in portrait scholarship, but its exact meaning is not always well understood. The article therefore analyses several Renaissance portraits, e.g. by Pisanella, Donatello, Piero della Francesca, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Albrecht Dürer, as well as a number of sources in which the ‘Motions of the Mind’ are explicitly and directly addressed. It also deals with the specific function of this concept in the Renaissance and the precise understanding of portraits with regard to the possibilities of painting to depict the human soul.
