Abstract
The article revisits the complex iconography of Botticelli's ca.1482 Primavera (Florence, Uffizi Gallery), and argues that it was executed to celebrate Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici's marriage to Semiramide Appiani. It also stresses the importance of ancient literary sources (Horace, Vergil, Lucretius, Ovid, Seneca), and the marital context. The figure of Flora may symbolize the bride, Zephyr the bridegroom. Flora may also represent the fertility/fruit-bearing tree of the Medici.
