Abstract
This article argues that Paul Klee's painting ‘Hauptweg und Nebenwege’ was not directly inspired by the topography of Egypt, as is often claimed, but by a passage in Oswald Spengler's popular book ‘Der Untergang des Abendlandes’. Klee thus took up Spengler's search for the ’Ur-Symbol‘, which he believed he had found in the culture of ancient Egypt.
