Abstract

The review praises the book's comprehensive detailed analyses, but criticises Dombrowski's understanding of the so-called ‘Savonarola problem’. The solution probably lies simply in the fact that Botticelli was also dependent on commissions in the 1490s - regardless of whether they came from supporters or opponents of Savonarola. The artist worked for both groups of clients and provided them with the desired style. This adaptability was constitutive of his success as a painter, but to this day makes it difficult to date his late works reliably on the basis of stylistic criticism alone.
