Abstract
This article traces Aby Warburg's passion for philately back to his childhood and puts forward the thesis that Warburg chose to deal with images primarily on the basis of this passion. The article also deals with the visual culture of stamps and the scientific demands of philately in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Another thesis of this contribution is that Warburg's method was decisively inspired by the way symbols were used in philately
