Translation of abstract (English)

The article is devoted to two sets of choir stalls preserved in St. Mary’s church in Krakow; the town councillors’ stalIs and the assessors’ stalIs. Contrary to the views presented in the literature the former are homogenous in origin and probably date from the 1520s (with additions made to the canopy in 1634). The latter had been incorrectly dated to 1634. In fact they are a remarkable example of Renaissance furnishings dating from the second quarter of the 16th century – possibly the 1530s. As has been correctly pointed out, both sets of Krakow sedilia are similar in design to the work of Peter Flötner, who was employed in Nuremberg. The excellent workmanship of the elegant and refined carved decorations (capitals of pilasters and columns, partitions between seats) and veneer made from various kinds of wood ought to be emphasized. The role played by the stalls serving the town authorities in the parish church remains a separate issue. The councillors’ and assessors’ stalls were located at the end of the nave as was common in many Central European and Polish churches. The stalls came under the patronage of the town councillors and assessors, as did altarpieces.
