Abstract

Since the beginning of the 20th century there has been extensive debate concerning the date and the grammar of forms in Taddeo Gaddi´s fresco cycle depicting the Story of Job in the Camposanto of Pisa. However, through consideration of works of sculpture in Siena and Florence from the first half of the Trecento into the discussion, answers to several unresolved questions are possible: The cycle was created around 1342 and the cruel manner in which Taddeo depicts battlement scenes is inspired by sarcophagus reliefs and by several scenes of the columns of the Roman Emperors Trajan and Marcus Aurelius. Taddeo´s landscapes however are inspired by theological thoughts and literature of his time.
