Abstract
What was really new in 15th century painting? My article explores this question using the example of central perspective and three genres of painting that particularly characterize the new tendencies in Italian art of the Quattrocento: the altarpiece, the autonomous portrait and the mythological painting. The relationship of the altarpiece with innovations in Renaissance architecture, the dependence of the portrait on gender roles and the extraordinary innovative power of mythological paintings become clear.
