Abstract
This article deals in detail with Leonardo as a portrait painter. Using the example of his portraits of Ginevra de' Benci, Cecilia Gallerani, La Belle Ferronière and the Mona Lisa, the article explains to what extent and in which manner Leonardo was truly innovative. This analysis is based both on the formal qualities of the four portraits and on their respective contexts.
