Translation of abstract (English)
Jerzy Nowosielski, one of Poland’s leading contemporary painters, grew up on the Catholic-Orthodox borderland, coming into contact with the Old Believers as a fully formed artist, who was fascinated by the history of Christian sects. He recalls this in a sketch published in 1971 entitled "The Problem of the Icon", in which he also evokes Nikolai S. Leskov’s short story "The Sealed Angel" (1873), translated into Polish by Zbigniew Podgórzec (1935-2003), who was one of the painter’s friends. Nowosielski points to the authenticity of the Old Believers’ practices, which were injudiciously considered to be primitive. According to the artist, Leskov’s short story serves as a testament to the Old Believers’ high level of religious and artistic culture. The manner of understanding the icon’s spiritual message and the precision concerning painterly resources are both simply and accurately rendered by the author. Nowosielski's artistic orientation towards eternal issues is akin to the eschatology of the Old Believers.
